Music

Intent:

At Lakenheath Community Primary School, our aim is to provide high quality teaching that extends far beyond the classroom experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children. Through singing songs, playing and composing, children learn about the structure and organisation of music. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music in a variety of different contexts.

Implementation:

Our pupils will learn that music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. They will be inspired and engaged by music education. Music lessons will engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and develop their talent as musicians, and in turn increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they will develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen without discrimination to the best in the musical canon.

Music is taught weekly to all classes. Our scheme of work combines elements from BBC Ten Pieces and Music Express. It is used from Year R - 6 to ensure a wide exposure to different genres of music, with lots of practical opportunities to explore and develop as musicians and singers.

Impact:

We use a range of strategies to assess what skills and knowledge the children have attained each term including the following:

  • Performance
  • Pupil voice
  • Regular feedback during each lesson
  • Self and peer assessments of their learning and performance
